Original Letter

Hello Elders, I am reaching out to you because I really need some advice and guidance.

I am currently a single mother of a 2 year old boy with not much support, so my options on being able to go out and work are slim to none, and any "work from home" positions would still require some form of childcare which, financially, is not an option for me. I've been taking this time to teach, potty train and enjoy my time with him. I have also been working on myself, however, I feel stuck. I have amazing professional experience, but no one seems to want to hire me. I discovered, the beginning of last year, that my life's purpose is to heal others, so I became certified in Complementary Alternative Medicine and Natural Holistic Remedies until I am able to enroll in school again to further my education in the medical field and healing arts.

Any advice or words of encouragement you have for me would be great.

Elder Response

I want to commend you for how you have handled your situation!  You're smart enough to spend time with your son and work on the skills he needs and continue to work on yourself as you try to figure out your employment situation.

As far as your education goes, why not look into classes online?  So many colleges and universities now offer that.  Check into financial aid that would be available to a single mom.  I think the possibilities are endless.  You just have to be willing to spend time and effort looking.

One option that came to my mind Lil is:   have you considered doing some babysitting to earn extra money.  This way you can have your son with you, maybe do some online schooling and earn some money.  Depending on the age of the child (ren) you babysit your son could have a playmate.

There are some organizations that help single mothers in your situation.  Do some googling and check our your local organizations.  Try to think out of the box, where to look, how to get your education and how to be employed.  Sometimes when you start looking around at what's available other things may turn up that you hadn't thougt of.

Reach out to people you know and trust for work possibilities and suggestions for what might be available in your area.  You'd be surprised how many people are willing to help and sometimes one thing leads to another.  If you belong to a church, see what is available there.

I think you've got a good head on your shoulders and are on the right track.  Hopefully I've provided you with enough suggestions to encourage you and get you moving in the right direction.

Good luck!  I wish you well and please feel free to write again.

Best Regards,

Susanne
