DATING/RELATIONSHIP : Should I go back?
Letter #: 409845
Category: Dating/Relationship

Original Letter

Two years ago I met this handsome, sweet, kind and caring man! After a few months of dating, I broke up with him over what my friends said. We remained friends for another month but then lost contact. We've talked on and off throughout the two years and now he's wanting the relationship back and so do I.  Should I go back out even though we live two hours apart? I'm 16 years old and don't have my car yet.

Elder Response

You know, Emma, I need to ask you - do you really need this man in your life? Think about it: since you met him at age 14, he must have been the first real love of your life, so naturally you'd like to keep him. But you are 16 now with the opportunity of meeting all kinds of boys; so why be tied up with this guy? Not only that, he lives two hours away. Wouldn't it be more fun to have a boyfriend who lives near you?

You said you originally broke up with this man because of what your friends said. I wonder what your friends think now that you want to get back together with him.  I usually think that we have to follow our own heart and not listen to others' opinions, but sometimes we need to realize that our friends love us and don't want to see us hurt. Based on that, it's best in your case to listen to them.

You know, Emma, being 16 can be a lot of fun. There are so many activities you can be involved in, so many kids you can have fun with - all near you in your neighborhood - so free yourself up and not be loaded down with a long distance romance. Let the past be the past and move on. I hope you can do that and wish you luck.

Best Regards,

Mrs.G
