The beautiful game

My dream is to become a big-league soccer coach. How do I get there? Playing the game is a good start, says our elder.

Dear EWC

My dream is to one day become a soccer coach and coach in the big leagues in Europe. I am currently in my first year in university and studying psychology. I am really worried because I do not know what steps to take after these four years so as to head into the world of soccer and coaching.

The very first question that comes to mind is whether you are attending a university with a soccer team. You never speak of playing the game, and I expect that if you want to end up as a soccer coach you should start as a player – and be a good one. Did you play in high school? Also, have you investigated having a double major – for example, psychology and physical education?

Have you discussed your goals with any of the school’s advisers? That would be a good place to start. In addition, have you spoken with any soccer coaches to learn what road they took to achieve their goal?

I looked online and there are many courses, and there is also important information on licensing.
See this link: HOW TO GET A SOCCER COACHING LICENSE for a description of the various levels.
And see HOW TO GET SOCCER COACHING CERTIFICATION: USSF AND NSCAA

This should all give you a starting place. Surf the internet for more information and best of luck in finding your career.
